The deep web is a repository of secrets, hiding in plain sight. It is the source of copyrighted works and all types of illicit merchandise, but also information about politics, medicine, human trafficking victims, and even children’s literature. At its heart are the many deep web links that aggregate data from different sources found within this dark corner of the Internet. These networks can be frustratingly difficult to navigate–every site seems to be cloaked in password protection or encrypted content–but they are also an invaluable source for anyone trying to access dangerous information without being traced. The deep web is not indexed by search engines like Google or Yahoo!. These sites do not follow the link structure used by the World Wide Web, but contain static pages. It is possible to create an index of these sites using spidering, but it is a monumental task. So instead of searching for material, you need to know where to find it. Then, once you get there, you are confronted with a whole different challenge: finding what you are looking for amidst the confusing list of links. You are likely to find that many of these sites are password protected or require users to register in order to access their content. Once inside the site, however, users can search through thousands of links without leaving their own computer. The most significant difference between the deep web and the surface web (what we normal people see on a search engine like Google) is that within the deep web there are no real pages. Instead, there exist "webpages" made up of countless links or, more accurately, "hyperlinks" – locations inside a website where you can click and view any other page. The term "deep web" refers to all of these hyperlinks and their related data. The deep web is, of course, used for all sorts of purposes both legal and illegal. The most notorious use of the deep web is the illicit marketing of child pornography. The recent arrest of Marc Dutroux in Belgium who kept young girls in his dungeon for months at a time while the authorities sought them out, only to find them when they were already dead and decaying, was a result of such marketing efforts. There are other ways to find what exists within the deep web; you could do it manually by copying and pasting website addresses into your browser or by writing a search engine program that bypasses normal indexing systems and instead "crawls" through different sites (like search engines do). However, some websites maintain their own search engine. One example is the search engine Nibbler which relies on a unique link structure completely different from orphaning sites found in the deep web. One of the greatest strengths of the deep web is that, unlike other forms of data crawling, it does not require a large amount of computational power. Search engines that use more traditional indexing techniques typically rely on more powerful computers with significant amounts of random access memory (RAM) to perform their searches. In contrast, a spider running through a lot of links on a whole lot of pages may only require a few megabytes of space and a couple hundred CPU cycles. cfa1e77820
