1. Field of the Invention
This invention relates to (a) a novel method for preparing a polyurethane which contains polymerized glycidyl ether of polyoxyalkylene polyol, and (b) the use of such polyurethane in coatings and paint products.
2. Description of the Prior Art
Coatings, paints and other finishes applied to a variety of surfaces such as metal, plastic, wood and stone require appropriate binders which impart adhesion to the substrates and typically also impart a desirable finish. Polyurethane is one type of binder used in finishing and in recent years has become a useful binder in finishing operations.
There are a number of methods of preparing polyurethanes. In one method, a polyisocyanate such as hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), is reacted with a polyol. The polyol may be reacted with the diisocyanate in a solvent, such as tetrahydrofuran (THF) or water, and the resulting polyol reacted with an isocyanate-reactive material, for example, an aliphatic amine such as a diamine or triamine. Polyol chains or polyurethane chain lengths can be varied by altering the average molecular weight of the polyol or by adding chain extenders, such as ethylene glycol or hexylene glycol. The polyurethane is then applied to a substrate surface by any of a variety of known techniques such as spraying, dipping, rolling, brushing, roll coating, air spray and airless spray techniques. Polyurethane based finishes impart desirable properties including durability, weathering resistance and gloss to the substrates and the products made from such substrates.
