Sabrina had been staring at the same problem for hours on end, and she still had no idea how to solve it. It had been a difficult day, and her mind was getting fuzzy. She couldn't focus on anything else but the issue in front of her, and all she could think about was giving up. Sabrina had never liked giving up on anything before; that's why she'd kept trying to figure out conundrums like this one for hours without success. Even though she could see no solution, Sabrina vowed to keep trying because what else was she going to do at the moment? Sabrina was about to give up, when she heard a quick knock on the door. She heard someone say, "Hello?" For some reason Sabrina was happy that someone had come; perhaps he could help her with her problem. "Guessing you're lost," said the voice. "Oh I am," said Sabrina with a slight smile. "I'm looking for an answer to this problem I've tried solving all day." The voice replied, "Well if you give me just two minutes I might be able to help you figure it out. What's the problem, and how did you get so stuck on it?" Sabrina replied, "It's this: If I had six apples and I took one away, would the number of apples total more than six?" The voice answered, "I can't answer that question because it doesn't make sense. Why do you keep asking me problems that don't make sense? You know what your problem is? You're thinking too hard." Sabrina started crying. With a big sniffle Sabrina said, "You're right . . . I'm sorry." The voice asked, "Are you going to be able to solve my problem in under two minutes?" Sabrina replied very quickly with a hopeful nod of the head. "Good," said the voice. "Now listen carefully, because I'm only going to tell you once." The problem was that Sabrina had been thinking about it the wrong way. She'd been trying to find the answer only in the present. But the answer wasn't in the present; it was in what came before. She needed to go back and look at what had happened before she started solving her problem. If she did that, she could solve it very quickly, because there was no 'if' about it—the number of apples would be greater than six because there were five apples before she took one away, even though she might have concluded that if 1 + 1 = 2 then 6 - 1 = 5. Sabrina quickly solved the problem in less than two minutes. Sabrina returned to her math problem, and after a few minutes she'd gotten it right. She felt ecstatic that she had successfully solved the problem. After that Sabrina returned to thinking about her day, but this time things were different. She was able to easily focus on what was most important at the moment—her work. As soon as she did, her mood lifted. She was no longer tired on this difficult day; instead, she felt rejuvenated by not giving up!
